I think the finale was kick ass. Not a single episode was boring. Even the "filler" episodes helped to develop the characters, and according to one of the producers, character development was the main purpose for the show. And although there are many connections to Christianity, there are many more related to other religions. The whole mythology of this place was well crafted. I'm sad the story has ended, but enough was answered for me and the interpretations people throughout the world will take from it will be all across the spectrum.
