American Football began as competitions between different small mining towns and the miners' football teams, to see who was best.

skateboarding "competitions" began as an offshoot of promotional tours. They were never intended to be true competition, because competition is actually antithetical to the skater/surfer life. The same goes for surfing "competitions." They are straight up bullshit. XGames is as anti-skating as it gets man.
