A major-label bidding war ensued, and Beck signed an innovative contract with Geffen that allowed him to continue releasing uncommercial material on smaller independent labels. In the meantime, another indie album, the 10" record A Western Harvest Field by Moonlight, was released in January 1994 by Fingerpaint. "

It sounds to me like I was right about the Mellow Gold stuff being recorded in 1991.

Just because it was released in 1994 doesn't mean it was recorded after "pure guava". Perhaps Beck's stuff was even recorded first?

"The Pod" was recorded in 1990, a year before Beck even recorded anything.
