1st February...In 1787 the eccentric Archbishop of Dublin and prolific author, Richard Whately, was born. This absent-minded primate laid treasure trails for his dogs, gardened in his vestments, preached with his legs dangling over the edge of the pulput and threw home-made boomerangs. He also gave generous amounts to relieve the suffering of the poor during the Irish famine of the 1840s.
