Every one who breaks up in a rock band either starts a new band or goes solo. I never hear Paul Mcartney say he's quitting as a recording artist, or a Micheal Jackson, or hell even Rolling Stones, rock people do it till death, for better or worse.

I think it's very good that rap has an almost built-in expiry date. How many Rock bands are still going that should've quit after two or three albums? There's obvious ones like the Stones or Dylan or Bowie or Young (I know some people defend later material by these - either way I don't like any of their stuff period). There's a small handful of rock bands who are still making good stuff after ten or so years (SY, obviously, The Fall, many argue REM, who I could never stand). But I think it's definitely a good idea to quit unless you're still making albums at least nearly as good as your best stuff.
