Something like this happened to me recently,walking past a metal recycling plant,the smell,as you say unlocked a flood of memories,details of the source long forgotton,maybe it was like an aromatic deja vu,(do i need help?),i guess some songs do the same thing some times,transport you back.Maybe i should consult some vast psychology tome on smells and their effects on triggering memories.
