LLAMADAS TELEFONICAS by ROBERTO BOLAŅO
Early short-story collection by the author of 2666 features characters in loose or unexistent or uncertain plots; one can feel the influence of Raymond Carver or the Salinger of Nine Stories. Yet Bolaņo doesn't strive for realism: his bizarre creatures face situations that often push the imagination without becoming fantastic. These characters are born of borrowed literature as much as everyday experience or history-- alongside many films the characters watch while we in turn watch them, the specter of political genocide in South America is a constant presence in these uneven but haunting dreams of doomed relationships and people.
