It's just that this isn't a very good album in the studio. If Pitchfork's A>D>D is any indication, yeah, these songs were definitely meant to be played live.. I'd seen crappy quality videos of Calming the Snake before, but this one was really great, Kim Gordon wasn't really as vocally vicious as that on the album. Do they just hold back when they record their albums or something? If they had played the album we hear on record with as much energy as they play it in concert, then The Eternal would be a pretty cool album.
Also, Lee Ranaldo is the cutest old guy ever. Just saying.
