I've been looking at the new Sony models over at Universal Radio. I want a new, performance driven model, but at a more reasonable price. I just don't know what to do.

I've read that there are quality control issues with Degen, or at least there were in earlier days - so maybe you've just been unlucky.
Check out the reviews on eHam.net for the Degen De 1103:

The Sony's are nice - my biggest problem with the Sony ICF-SW7600GR, which by all accounts is a great radio, is that it doesn't have a tuning wheel!
I just couldn't deal with that. I've found so many numbers stations and various oddities, by using my radios tuning wheel that I really couldn't live without it - buttons are no replacement </rediculously petty irk>
Keep an eye out for the Grundig G3, which is coming in the next month or two.
It's an evolution of the De 1103 -> Eton E5 -> Grundig G5, and it apparently features improved Single Side Band operation and Synchronous Detection, which can be a big help for reception on SW if it's implemented well.
