for certain gnostic sects (persecuted and exterminated), judas was the real hero of the gospels for the reasons you hint at. by playing his part in the crucifixion melodrama, he sacrificed himself and allowed jeebus to do his job. jeebus had nothing to lose, mind you, as he was the son of god and he knew he'd resurrect. judas on the other hand was a mere human tasked with killling a god and going to hell for it in order to save humanity. ballz of steel i say.
