it's a combination of just a horribly tragic story-
guy falls in love, guy starts to die, lover has to put him out of his misery
combined with some truly horrifying images of self decay
throw in the pregnancy scene and you've got a very disturbing movie
Dead Ringers was similarly disturbing.
