Gene for Christ's sake! I mean looking at them objectively they were the worst of the worst. Maybe even worse than that. But for whatever reason I did actually like them, and even more difficult to explain ... I somehow still do.

Given the fact that you prefixed your reply to your friend with 'Holy Joe,' I take everything back. I might not see the similarity between Ace of Bass and the frankly God-like Saint Etienne
