hypothesis are guesses made before any experiment,
theories are explanations based on all current evidence and taking into account all current knowledge. two wholy different things. Hawking understands quantum mechanics as well as anyone can. it is a strange strange science, and none of it fits "common sense", because "common sense" only applies to the human macro level of the universe (what goes up must come down. wate flows downhill, bend it and it will break eventually, etc.)
in the quantum world superfluids flow UPHILL against gravity, supersolids allow other material to pass through without seeming solid! etc.
