The big difference is that relativity and gravitation can be checked or tested on earth , unlike black holes which are out of reach.
Plus , they absorb light and everything that comes near ; I've read they're the less known objects in the universe.
To me , Hawking theory is just an hypothesis ( but I'm no expert , as you can guess ).
