Well.... the point is mostly to have access to a lot of your music in an easy to sort through manner while allowing yourself both less room taken up and more variety at all times.
My mp3 player can only hold about 1/5 of the music on my HDD (I have an older Creative Zen Vision M, 30GB) but being able to fit ~220 albums in my pocket is a very nice convenience.
