Interesting thing about the Simpsons theme.. if I remember correctly, Matt Groening gave Danny Elfman a tape of songs he wanted Danny to reference for the theme, and I think Matt put the Residents on there as a reference point.
Closely related though not a cartoon is the music of Pee Wee's Playhouse...
