I've known a few in my time.The only thing you can do, is disown them or make sure you don't depend on them for anything.Always back yourself up with suspicion and investigative measure.However, the latter is just exhausting and somewhat akin to self-harm. It's a form of self-hatred, but I'm a believer that you can't teach people anything and that they only have the ability to learn.

Is he/she a 'close' friend, or just in your circle of friends?

I went with the disown method and I hear, he's coming on leaps and bounds.His current partner, seems as though she takes no shit though.lol (that's right 'lol' )
