wouldn't an apology qualify to eliminate any appearance of disrespect?
such as "we are deeply sorry that our fellow heathen insulted your religion. she deserves your punishment, but since the prophet preached mercy, we beg you to consider her ignorance and release her.

or some sort of ass kissing like that.
