for a well-read person like you, you're not showing a lot of historical understanding.

i cannot corroborate or deny if some of his wives were indeed 12, but consider:

-the concept of childhood is a fairly new one, dating back probably to rousseau
-in old times, you started working as soon as you could walk. there were no saturday morning cartoons.
-women got pregnant as soon as it was possible.
-ask yourself-- was marrying pubescent girls a common practice in that place at that time? or was he doing this on his own?
-think of other milennia-old practices like the jewish one of declaring a boy to be a man at 13. sure does that not apply today, does it? even though it's still done in a religious context, 13 year olds aren't ready to leave the nest. a full course of education takes something like 20 years these days.

it's a bit absurd to apply modern standards to the historical past, especially without making an attempt to understand what was going on back then.
