Just a bunch of friends with advanced degrees and some with none at all, most of whom live at the exact same income level as one another. I know a high school dropout or two that make a more comfortable living than several others I know with MFA's, and I also know several adjunct professors who all have side gigs at coffeeshops and theaters because they can't afford their student loan payments on their University salaries.
I can only offer anecdotal evidence, which is of little use in empirical research, I'm afraid.
Then again, "empirical research" sounds kinda academic to me.
