I wore my Joy Division T-shirt to dinner with some new South Carolina friends the other night. They're around my age. They'd never heard of Joy Division. When I tried to explain, they said, "Oh, an 80s band. They all sound alike." Did I let it bother me? No. Too bad for these people, I thought, more to be pitied than scorned, to think they must go home to their Celine Dion and old Heart compilation CDs that probably they don't even play.

I'm not making sense, am I? Are the drugs kicking in?
