My final conclusion: Both can be used acceptably, depending on the band. Some bands can use both acceptably, like Sonic Youth. Others such as the Smashing Pumpkins are doomed to are. Likewise bands that are obviously singular are doomed to is (Led Zeppelin is one zeppelin, fallout boy is one boy).
