actually, it's gig etiquette to not buddy up with the merch guy, if it's not a question like "how much?" or "do you have it in x size?" then you don't ask the merch guy anything personal. the only exceptions are a) he/she starts a conversation with you or b) you actually know the merch guy by name and have seen him/her on the other side of the table.
