Depending on the show, I tend to prefer the opposite. If it's fictional, I find good characterization to be one of the things that will keep me watching the show. I wouldn't enjoy Law & Order as much, for example, if there wasn't a continuous storyline with the recurring characters alongside the independent criminal cases.

Now if we're talking Dr. G on Discovery, I just want the facts. Depends on the angle of the show.
