The violence is extremely graphic but what I found hardest to deal with was the underlying idea behind it all. The film is quite theological/philosophical in the way it examines pain and humiliation as a kind of path towards transcendence. This sets it above torture-porn films like Saw and if anything makes it even more disturbing.
