I believe the magazine has a history of being very progressive, especially regarding the civil rights movement in the 60's. I have also read that, as far as the writing goes, it's considered pretty feminist by many.

It's also one of the few large corporations that had female leadership in the seventies from what I've read. I think hefners daughter became the president and CEO sometime in the early seventies.

Not really my thing so I'm no expert though.
