I feel that in addition to his "mood music about romance" goal, Nels is consciously expanding the definition of "the great American songbook" (even though, OK, not all composers are Unitedstatesians*). With SO many recent stabs at it, mostly dismal (Rod Stewart, whose talent commited suicide in 1975), a few great (Dylan), it's like Cline is saying, Look ding dongs, this is a living, organic and growing thing, and Sonic Youth and Annette Peacock are as much a part of it as Rodgers & Hammerstein.
In that sense, it's not Nels' first time: when he did
Interstellar Space Revisited with Gregg Bendian, he acknowledged he was trying to fight The Marsalis Bible On Jazz History and push the notion that fiery free jazz, electric Miles and early Weather Report belong in the jazz continuum just as Louie Armstrong or Charlie Parker do.
