He was very involved but he did suppress the careers of hugely talented animators. People like Ub Iwerks was basically responsible for creating Mickey Mouse and was pretty much the sole animator on most of the early cartoons but, while Disney himself is a household name, it's bordering on criminal that stuff as good as
this is now reliant on sites like youtube for its distribution.
I suppose in terms of your thread title, Disney was a 'Brilliant Artistic Visionary'
