all that said ms. noisefield yeah you should check out derek bailey's record "ballads". he actually plays old standards that wes montgomery might play but then the improvising is mostly in his "non idiomatic" style. ie very abstract.

thats true he has/would say that he isn't a jazz guitarist, but an improvisor... however before he delved deeply in improvisation he was a session guitarist for alot of traditional jazz bands playing more or less traditional jazz technique.
