derek bailey would probably be the first to say he was not a jazz guitarist though that was undoubtedly his upbringing. he seemed to think of himself as a "non idiomatic" improviser and not a jazz musician.

all that said ms. noisefield yeah you should check out derek bailey's record "ballads". he actually plays old standards that wes montgomery might play but then the improvising is mostly in his "non idiomatic" style. ie very abstract.
