if it's a ds, you can still play gba games for it, so get boktai and drill dozer and yoshi's island and so on for the gba. GET ALL THE CASLTEVANIA GBA/DS games. metroid fusion and metroid zero mission.
for the ds, get electroplankton (get the japanese version sincei it's REALLY cheap and will play in your us ds just fine), meteos, lunar knights, hotel dusk (best atmosphere of any portable game i've ever played), bangai-o, contact (my favoite game on the system), disgaea ds (most addictive game ever next to lumines), chrono trigger ds, contra 4, WORLD ENDS WITH YOU, Metal slug 7, mario and luigi: partners in time, professor layton, advance wars: dual strike, new super mario brothers (just a really fun game and you can probably get it anywhere).... lost in blue, trace memory, etrian oddyssey.. I really hope 7th dragon comes out here! I'm sure those smt games are fucking AMAZING -- shin megami tensei just fucking rules -- so get those too... but mainly, just get meteos and contact at the beginning and you'll be hooked. the ds is the greatest system.
I played through zelda: phantom hourglass and to be honest, it didn't do much for me... but minnish cap on the gba ruled.
