I've always viewed it as an extension of one's vocabulary.
Let's look at an example:
Person 1 says: "ouch, I burned my hand!"
Person 2 says: "FUCKING SHIT, I JUST BURNED MY HAND!"
As for me personally, I'm much more likely to run to the aid of person 2. At least quicker than I would person 1.
