I write sci-fi occasionally, but just for fun. I've got no idea how to get published.

write it first before you think about getting it published

Science fiction, in theory, should be the easist to work around, since you don't have to conform to real world realities. While most fiction requires one to come up with "possible" scenarios, science fiction allows you to think up the impossible and make it possible, time travel, aliens, futuristic inventions that don't currently exist. You've chosen your start off point, writing a story set into the future, just build from there. Once you have what you think is your final draft look into publishing it in Sci-fi magazines, they still exist and still publish new sci-fi from up and coming writers. I can't think of any off hand but if you go to the bookstore they'll probobly have some in the magazine section, and it may even tell you how to send your story to them to get it published.
