musicmatch dont support mac anymore.
wmp? you tried it on mac? i wouldnt have a problem if it was a bit more like the windows version.

Tokolosh 09.06.2006 03:45 PM

Good question. I'm on a mac too, and I know all the pc players well, and nothing beats itunes. It's a dilemma for me, 'cause I know I need both, windows media player aaand realplayer for most sites. Irritating!

Edit: I know Windows media player is compatible, cause I use it.

pardon me toko, but that is such a crock. really! no fucking way.

now for wax-- the question would be first what kinds of features you're looking for-- are you looking for something really minimal, or for something that can organize a huge database, or what? because that would determine the direction of your search...

touch me i'm sick 09.06.2006 03:48 PM

the only thing i don't like about itunes is that depending on the computer it opens really really slow. and sometimes if you actually want to buy music, you can't find the shit you want

wax 09.06.2006 03:51 PM

ive got wmp and real player, but they are very basic and a bit buggy on a mac i find.
between itunes, quicktime and vlc i have no trouble. ive just got a shitload of music i havnt listened to and i get crazy with organisation sometimes. i want a player to put all the stuff i havnt heard in and keep itunes for my main music library. itunes is a good piece of software. but ive been searching all night and the only other decent thing i can find is itunes alternative. but that wont let me select a different folder to add. i can only add things thru a .xml file, and i dont really know what it is or how to make one for my other folder. i know i could just make a playlist with for the other albums in itunes, but im a fussy bastard and i want a half decent 2nd player.

Tokolosh 09.06.2006 03:54 PM

Maybe I was exaggerating a little. What I meant to say is that itunes is more user friendly, if you work with a mac. It's well organized and complete.
There are many more players for pc and it can get annoying sometimes.

!@#$%! 09.06.2006 03:55 PM

in the windows world i see it like this:

foobar2000 > winamp > windows media classic > itunes > musicmatch

(musicmatch is so truly horrid)

but in the OsX universe??

i'd start looking at the features you need. man i hate it when people don't read threads & just yammer their own opinions out of context.

--

edit: sorry, so what you want is something that won't add things automatically to the library?
edit: and toko by yammering opinions i didnt mean you

wax 09.06.2006 03:58 PM

i want something with a browsable library in the player.
thats about it.
you can get winamp for classic but not osx.

itunes is the best on a mac, im sure there are loads of better players on pc though.

nicfit 09.06.2006 03:58 PM

looks like he simply would like to have a library with all the things he already know and one for the new things he has still to hear.

wax 09.06.2006 03:59 PM

if you meant me, you posted while i was posting.

nicfit 09.06.2006 04:00 PM

yep,sorry----i did not mean to "ovverride" you.

Tokolosh 09.06.2006 04:02 PM

You can take a look here wax. I downloaded my versions here.
It's a good site for mac and pc.

Edit: Go to http://www.softpedia.com/ and select the green mac button and type media player in the search field.
You'll get a list of all the free players available.

!@#$%! 09.06.2006 04:07 PM

hm... as i remember from my musicmatch days they had very good library features (though the shit would crash often etc on win98)

what i didn't like about itunes when i tried it was that it wasn't a very flexible program, in general.

nowadays i no longer use libraries-- i put everytihng on a big hard drive alphabetically organized and open the folder straight with winamp.

so what i'd do in your case maybe is search for an itunes plugin of some kind that would add the flexiblity you need.

if you don't know where to start maybe ask the geeks in one of the boards here:

arstechnica AV forum

arstechnica Mac forum

i'd try #1 first...

thanx everyone for the help.
i found this,
http://www.songbirdnest.com
it looks good. its only out for windows so far though, but ive downloaded the nightly binary for osx.

wax 09.06.2006 05:16 PM

wooo,
and its perfect for what i want.
might even replace itunes when they put out a finished version, there are loads of features.
