Schizophrenia

is their best song. Sonically speaking, of course. I'm not just saying this because I'm schizophrenic.

scott v 08.06.2011 08:22 PM

that's very debatable... they have a huge back catalog of songs I can think of a dozen easily that are on par or exceed schizophrenia

hevusa 08.06.2011 08:25 PM

Schizophrenia has always been their standout song as far as I'm concerned.

Dr. Eugene Felikson 08.06.2011 08:54 PM

Sister is definitely my favorite SY album.

I prefer Pipeline/Kill Time though.

Count Mecha 08.06.2011 11:49 PM

I've said it multiple times already, but I hate the drums on the album cut of schizophrenia. They just sound so hollow or something. But oddly, I don't mind them on the rest of the album. I fucking love them on Catholic Block actually. So I dunno, I probably unconsciously compare it too much to the Year Punk Broke take, which is absolutely perfect.

I always thought Stereo Sanctity was more entertaining sonically really. But whatever, no need to play favorites. That whole album rocks.

E. Noisefield 08.07.2011 12:18 AM

Hmm...

No, "Schizophrenia" is phenomenal, but it could have been better. In that instrumental section after "has taken its tole" could have been stronger. I'm not sure what I mean by that, but that climactic moment (or lead up to climax) lacks something for me. Seems to me it should just be a little.... heavier. :(

E. Noisefield 08.07.2011 12:57 AM

I've never been able to pinpoint my favorite Sonic Youth song.

Perhaps "Candle". Not sure, though. But "Shizophrenia" is definitely top 5.

Great song and fantastic album, but far away from their best or my favourite...

I could not disagree more. By far their best album in my opinion.

Ohh, it's on!!..

I been a junkie so I lean towards Winners blues an Junkies promise.

These have always been my top faves (no order):

Schizophrenia*
Tuff Gnarl*
Brave Men Run*
Tom Violence
I Dreamed I Dream
Shadow of a Doubt*
Catholic Block
Candle*
Wildflower Soul*
Hoarfrost*
Female Mechanic...
Heather, Angel*
NYC Ghosts...*
Free City Rhymes*
Karen Revisited
Rain on Tin
Sympathy for the Strawberry*
Diamond Sea*
Massage the History
JC
Justice is Might
Disappearer*
Titanium Expose*
Dripping Dream
Peace Attack

As far as album cuts go anyway. Forgive me if I've missed some. I'm into the jammy songs, and the dreary shoe-gazy songs, and many of the droning faux rockers.

I can't pick an absolute favorite, but like I said: think "Candle" is just about the archetypal SY song. It strangely reminds me of the velvets, and I like that.

Hehe, yeah, I did h a few times in my youth, and I think Junkie's Promise saved me from becoming an addict.

I still think it`s Reena. But yeah, Schizophrenia is also very great. I can still remember very clearly the moment I heard those great drum-beats first time. And I just love the sounds of that album, like I love the sounds of all their album made in the Sear sound. Sister is definitely their best album!

Count Mecha 08.08.2011 03:19 AM

Well I think the thing is, the drums across the whole album do disappoint me in some regard, but only because I can't help but think to EVOL where they're absolutely flawless to me. Even though I enjoy how Catholic Block or Stereo Sanctity sound, I can't help but think 'now if we could just get the drums from EVOL, that'd be incredible.' Or shit even the drums from Macbeth, that song has the perfect sound.

I'm not even a big production stickler, it's just Schizophrenia for some reason gets to me.

I don't mean to put words into Steve's mouth, but I believe I read somewhere that even he doesn't care much for the drums on Sister, like he wished he had been more vocal during post or something. Could be talking out of my ass, but it sounds familiar.

No discredit to the album though, the playing is absolutely tops, I love all the parts. And actually I'll amend my statement a bit, I was just listening to Pipeline/Killtime and I'd forgotten about that little jagged five second breakdown he does, I absolutely love the way that sounds.

i'd say schizophrenia is in my top 3 sonic songs but i don't really have 1 favourite. sister is probably my favourite album of theirs though.

i see your point though about schizophrenia; reminds perhaps of the drums in 'she is not alone', where i have troubles with.

sister is in my top 3 sy albums.
schizophrenia however, sounds weak to me (the first part) and i think its also the weakest track of the album. dont get me wrong, i like how it goes after the first part and a lot. it hasnt created major issues, like for example sunday in atl has done.

I think those drums are iconic! I can't quite describe the feeling that goes through me when I hear that bum-bum-dat-dat-bum-bum-dat-dat-bum-bum-dat-dat...

Holy shit I just said "bumbumdatdat".

Yeah, I think there were a few parts that got to me: the first being the "hundred times a day and still it's not enough", and the second being the chorus, because when I did do it, that's exactly how I felt.

Glad I followed Thurston's example on that one instead of, say, Kurt's.

Jeremy 08.08.2011 06:29 PM

I think the hollow drums give the record an interesting sound, but I can see why others, especially Steve himself, don't really care for it.

Easily my favorite Sonic Youth album though. Cotton Crown, Catholic Block, Pipeline, Stereo Sanctity, White Cross, PCH, etc etc etc.
