Interesting things to know about certain films.

A thread about movie mistakes, accidents, coincidences etc.

Here's one for ya.

Did you know that IBM probably got it's name from Kubrick's HAL 9000 computer?
Yeah. The next letters after the letters that make up the word HAL are IBM.
Coincidence or not?

Do you know anything interesting about another film?

While filming 'Lonesome cowboys',Warhol and co. got a bizarre visit by 'real' cowboys while the crew where having it,shall we say, large. They burst into the ranch and everyone got really scared as the locals had been harassing them because men dressed as cowboys doing ballet moves are not something that you generally come across in middle America.Turns out that the two cowboys were allright and just wanted to see what was going on.Taylor Mead would have defended everyone. In the same movie the 'raping' of Viva was kinda instigated as everyone was a bit pissed off at her sleeping with just about every man on set.

In the movie Gladiator someone was wearing jeans and I saw a jetplane flying in the air...
Another stupid thing. In the day after tomorrow, when the cold chases them they close a tiny door and it stops... sorry for the crappy english explanation...

it's the other way around though. the name HAL comes from IBM... IBM were already providing punch card machines to the nazis a few decades before arthur c clarke wrote 2001.

Very true. Hitler was powered by IBM.

Pookie 07.11.2006 06:23 AM

"In the years after the making of 2001, a rumor began to circulate that HAL's name was a play on the computer maker IBM—the letters H, A and L each coming one letter in the alphabet before the initials I, B and M. Arthur C. Clarke has always strenuously denied the rumor, most recently in the forward to HAL's Legacy where he writes, "the name wasn't a play on IBM—it was an acronym, of sorts, standing for the words "Heuristic ALgorithmic.""

i think im correct in saying that ibm were initially approached by kubrick and co to put their name on the computer (the movie has quite a few instances of product placement, such as the pan am rocket, and the at&t phone). obviously, the company didnt want their name put on a computer who went beserk and killed the crew, so they denied. in response the writers just went down the alphabet for each letter to change the name. i dont think ibm were pleased with it either.

fun movie facts!

dr strangelove was originally supposed to be a serious drama, but they realised the entire nuclear situation was so stupid that they changed it to a comedy

1 out of every 150 people in the entire population of new zealand was involved in the making of the lord of the rings trilogy

at the end of apocalypse now, they really did kill the cow

Yeah! Without IBM the whole holocaust pretty much wouldn't have happened.

Yeah! I noticed something was wrong with the way that scene was shot. She looks kinda surprised and a little overcome by the other actors.
It looks very snuffy and intimidating. Didn't know about the cowboys popping in. Thanx.

There are apparently 180 mistakes in Gladiator. There's a jerry in the background in one of the scenes in the arena.

Nice to read the posts about 2001. It looks like it probably is the other way round.

She wasn't happy about that at all.It was at the same time that she was losing it with drugs and general Factory madness.Nico was a good driver by the way.

Oh and the same rape put Warhol on the FBI files for some time. The rape is mostly acted-mimicked but it was cruel nonetheless.
