Sonic Vocabulary

It's amazing, looking back at it, how many words I've learned from Sonic Youth. Being that I'm sixteen, I haven't gotten any other exposure to certain words that SY introduced me to. Androgynous, Bourgieous, Ineffable, and I think voyeuristic just to name a few. This is exactly why I like SY sooooo much. Their lyrics are just as strong as their sonic love. I hate shit-for-brains bands that get huge publicity while all of the literate light their way with torches. (Can't name any of these bands at the moment.) Anyways, sorry, this was more of a realization than a respondable thread but hey joni! Has anyone else added to their vocabulary from the sonic library? What words?

I think the use of yr predates Allen Ginsberg.

I might as well say, they didn't come up with "Bourgieous"! The French did!

Of course. SY were tearing up American Bandstand in 56.

Did you know that Clint Eastwood is described in million dollar baby as "Cantankerous"?

Cantankerous 07.11.2006 01:29 AM

No I didn't, but I did know that it means ill-tempered and troublesome.

Not necessary language vocabulary, but art & literary vocabulary, becuz of their art/lit connections--cover artists, refs in songs, etc.

Ya, Screaming Skull introduced me to quite a bit.

1) I started using the word yr after listening to sy

2) It's been a while, & i've read him since, but after reading Lee's 80's journal, i read Raymond Carver (it has to do w/ Lee meeting Raymond and then finding out he died...)

3) I think i learned more about how to play guitar, or rather the WHOLE guitar, when i saw sy in austin in '99 ( i think it was '99, it was right after their truck was stolen)
