There's no hiding the fact that I'm a big fan of the cover album. So when I heard that James from Yo La Tengo had just dropped a collection of Prince covers, I figured it'd be an awesome novelty. I figured it'd be super tongue-in-cheek. I mean Yo La Tengo was so hip. And Prince was so not. Right?

What I never figured was that a collection of 4-track re-imaginings of the Pastel One would make me realize that Prince was NOT lame-ass soccer-mom funk. No way. The joke was on me. Thank God.

See it's only 30 seconds or so into the first track -- a droning piece of perfection known as "1999" that it becomes obvious that there was never anything ironic about this collection of covers. James McNew was aware of the brilliance of Prince's songwriting. And he wanted the (hipster) world to be aware as well.

The important thing to say about this record is that it's a fucking great listening experience. Each of its tracks has made onto many many mixtapes I've made over the years, and often led to someone asking "OMG... Who IS this???" It's all that good. Trust me. Trust me.

It's lo-fi. And it rocks. And it chills. And it's sexy. And it's a wonderful tribute (and if needbe, a great introduction to one of America's greatest songbooks).

My net is way to screwed at the moment to attempt that download, but as soon as it's fixed I'm going to be all over this.

I tried to get it and d/l'ed the rar successfully but it didn't extract right using winrar. Bummer. I'll see if I can hunt it down somewhere else because it sounds interesting.

I've heard about this record, but never could track it down on wax. So cool of you to include this on yr list. I'm anxious to d/l it and give it a listen, I've only heard a couple tracks off it before (coincidentally on a few mixtapes that were given to me)....

It's seriously one of those fluke records that I grabbed when it came out not expecting much, but I've loved it for yeeeeaaaaaarrrrssssss and it just keeps sounding more awesome to me.

It shouldn't be too hard to find on lots of blogs I would guess.

No, but its always one of those records that when i sit down at my computer my mind goes blank and i forget about it, and i eventually end up typing ''boredoms''' into the search bar.

As a huge Prince fan, I am curiously downloading this now.

It's quit great. He did a great job covering the tracks.

This is almost insanely great, I REALLY appreciate the link. Actually makes me appreciate the YLT guy more *never cared much for them outside of a few songs*

I am starting to grow fond of them the last weeks.

But yeah, I love fakebook...and everone else seems to hate it. Sunny pop.

Y'know I'm only super familiar with I Am Not Afraid Of You... and only heard a couple of others in passing...maybe I'll grab something else and give it a go.

I bumped into a gaint fan of that at a festival once. Fakebook or I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One are my favorites and worth a try.
