I've decided The Eternal doesn't suck..
 

It's just that this isn't a very good album in the studio. If Pitchfork's A>D>D is any indication, yeah, these songs were definitely meant to be played live.. I'd seen crappy quality videos of Calming the Snake before, but this one was really great, Kim Gordon wasn't really as vocally vicious as that on the album. Do they just hold back when they record their albums or something? If they had played the album we hear on record with as much energy as they play it in concert, then The Eternal would be a pretty cool album.

Also, Lee Ranaldo is the cutest old guy ever. Just saying.

It's rare that a studio album is able to capture the aggression of a live performance.

I'm listening to the Action Swingers' Toe Rag Sessions CD at the moment and, having seen that band live a couple of times, I'd say it's one of the few that pulls it off - and certainly does a far better job than their live album.

I'm sure the band is thrilled to have won you over, Summer.

i was blown away..i've tryed year after year to get
my health right...the doctors put me on pasta and it
helped a little but pasta ain't even close to the
health in this video..i've lost 250 pounds in a year
and have already started dating again because i feel
like a new man..yoga (don't confuse this with yogurt
the popular dairy desert) this is totally different..
this is all about breathing..this has also helped me
quit alcohol..i was an alcoholic for 54 years...i went
to jail for being drunk at a taping of "wheel of fortune"..
that long night in jail got me thinking about a new way
of life..that's when a friend of mine from the church
gift shop turned me on to this video..without it i'd be
dead and i never would have heard of yoga..i would have been
one unflexible corpse..but now with this yoga video i feel
like i'm never gonna die...i feel like it's not even real..
sure friends of mine have died this week but they were
screwin around with speed...i feel like i'm gonna live
forever and i want to thank Mrs. Mars...i also heard
she's a big fan of the red hot chili peppers and i love
them too..all the guys in that band do yoga...i guess
it's the hippest thing goin so don't feel like it's gonna
make you uncool...i've been busting a move more than
ever since the chicks found out that i do yoga...i feel
like i can fight Tyson with the new power i got in my
leg muscles...this video will change your life if you're
a boozer or junk food addict..it'll even change it if
you're just plain bored...believe this yoga thing has
something to do with god..i couldn't touch my toes a
week ago now i'm feeling holy.

for my part, I didn't really like this album until the third time through, but now I think it is really good, aside from a few EJSTNS and Goo vibes of under-preparation and lack of concerted effort on some of the tunes, it is definitely solid. It is a bit behind Rather Ripped, and I wish they would have continued on the NYC -> Murray Street -> Sonic Nurse vibe of mixing psychedelic no-wave thrash with melodic, structured, harmonic music, but I see they went more for the new RocknRoll sonic youth. I dig it. Though, I think these are not Kim's greatest vocals, her voice is only for certain tunes, and these ones I feel are not it.

I will say this album feels very very hurried, like there was not enough time taken in production and recording.. I guess thats what happens when you change labels after nearly two decades..

I think they thought about this one more than Rather Ripped, and less than Sonic Nurse. That's why it's a good record.

I think they thought about it more than RR, but the songs are better on RR, particular tunes like Jams Run Free, Reena, Incinerate, Do You Believe In Rapture... still the Eternal is very much a good record.

I still like Rather Ripped more. That isn't saying "The Eternal sucks THAT bad" because.. I love Rather Ripped, so.
