The Official Free Jazz Thread

I looked back more than a year and didn't find anything other than free jazz concert listings and recomendation threads. I thought it'd be nice to have an official thread, post shit.

Heres a disc I found for download. I'm listening to it now, it's not too bad.

Track Listing:
1. First Mass 2. How Long Blues 3. Frank Goes To 4. Another Mess 5. Which Way Is That? 6. Three Ghosts 7. Some Relief 8. And Now Some Blues 9. Now 10. And Now 11. Maple Leaf Rag
Download from MediaFire
The tracks don't have titles in the tags so it'll have to be done yourself.

Myra Melford is an adventurous jazz pianist who has collaborated with Henry Threadgill, Butch Morris and Dave Douglas while leading her own troupes on a series of albums. Hans Bennink may be one of the most adventurous and creative drummers of the past 40 years. He’s worked with Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon, Eric Dolphy, The Ex, Derek Bailey, Don Cherry, Peter Brotzmann among many others. Bennink is a drummer who has always been adept at straddling the line between playfulness and ferocity. It is only fitting that these two souls should collaborate on album that makes free jazz somehow delightful and accessible. I love free jazz, but this may be one of the most fun examples of the genre that I’ve heard. If your ears shut themselves off at the mere mention of free jazz, then check this one out since it is alternately absurd, avant-garde and a ray of sunshine. Eleven Ghosts somehow puts a smile on my face even though it is a bit impenetrable at times.

destination-out.com

site with mp3s of tracks from rare and forgotten free jazz etc....lots of updates tho after awhile the links are deactivated.

Last date by Dolphy is quite cool. It was his last recording :(

I would like also to mention an underrated free-jazz label, the Paris-based Byg-Actuel. They recorded sessions in Paris from some of the most prominent free-jazz players of the late 60's. Here you can check their catalog: http://www.jazzdiscography.com/Labels/byg.htm

I've got some of them and they are killer. Worth discovering.

Saint_Huck 10.05.2008 06:33 AM

By the way, has somebody seen Steve Reid live? He is coming to spain with his ensemble. The guy from Four Tet will also be perfoming with them. I'm still thinking whether if go or not, it's like 3 hours away from home. The bill also includes Model 500 and the Slits.

Two weeks ago I saw Brötzmann quartet with included Paal Nilssen Love, Kondo and Massimo Pupilo (Zu's bassist). Bombastic show! Brotzmann is still a teenager...

themawt71 10.05.2008 09:21 AM

technically it is not dolphys last recording tho its called last date. there's a cd you can buy called last recording that has nathan davis on tenor sax another american guy maybe and the rest euros. it was his last studio recording tho there might some more recorded shows. i prefer last date tho.

such a shame that he died of undiagnosed diabetes. he collapsed on stage in europe somewhere and the doctors just thought he was another american junky and unknowingly let him die. fuckers....

i love paal nilssen love btw. one of my favorite drummers.

I LOVE this album. You Don't Know What Love Is is probably one of the best songs EVER.
