pacific coast highway.

i was just listening to this song, and it may be one of my favorite SY songs, it sound like SY doing a krautrock song or something. I was wandering have they ever played this song live? It doesn't seem like its a very popular song.

porkmarras 03.25.2006 12:53 PM

its one of my favourite sy songs too.that instrumental section is sunkissed and spellbinding.

schizophrenicroom 03.25.2006 12:54 PM

Yep. It's been played live a lot.

It's one of my fave SY songs. When it gets into the middle of the song, it's so perfect. Kim's vocals both scare me and hypnotize me.

dazedcola 03.25.2006 12:56 PM

I saw them live last summer and they did it live. It was great and dissonant. I enjoy the extra trumpet part thrown in too.

Hip Priest 03.25.2006 12:57 PM

It's a good song, the version on 'Hold That Tiger' is certainly nice.

It's not as lyrically strong as some stuff of theirs though.

whorefrost 03.25.2006 12:57 PM

i've seen it live! amsterdam paradiso and glasgow barrowlands 2004! you can hear a live version on Hold That Tiger! There is also a video performance of this floating about on the net somewhere....

Adult-Daypass 03.25.2006 12:58 PM

It's one of my favorites too,
definitely my favorite from Sister even though Sister has a lot of great songs
the middle section is just so pretty and I love Kim's voice
the song is very mysterious to me too
and the lyrics go way deeper than what's seen word for word

CHOUT 03.25.2006 02:13 PM

Anybody ever hear the version done by Dos (mike watt and kira's two bass band)? It's very minimal and real cool.
I could yousendit an mp3 of it if anybody is interested.

Neongod 03.25.2006 03:06 PM

I prefer the album version or early live performances. The horn doesn't work for me. Great song though, especially the middle.

noumenal 03.25.2006 03:34 PM

Great song.

Follows the ABtransA pattern that they use often and the little transistion is really awesome, as usual. The B section is typically instrumental, but the weird thing is that it's the more straightforward and less dissonant part. A lot of times the B section is a noise improv, or something like that. In a lot of ways, PCH is like an inverted Becuz.

Also, has anybody noticed the cool relationship between the alternating notes in the sections? The A section alternates between two notes a half-step apart and seems to always be moving up towards the higher note and in the B section the alternating notes are a whole-step apart and just give this really nice going nowhere feeling. The half-step alternation sounds like it's going up because, basically, we're moving from an Emin to an EMaj chord and that's the way it's going to sound, particularly with the rhythm they use. The alternation in the B section is more ambiguous - moving between F# and E. But to me it sounds like moving between V and IV. The unplayed I feels like B to me.

And, in usual SY fashion, the tonality is implied, but we never get a cadence. It's this awesome floaty feeling that really propels the song. Am I the only one who wants to hear a B Major chord from when the B section starts till the end of the song?

krastian 03.25.2006 04:54 PM

One of my favorite songs....I about went nuts when they busted it out on the last tour.

CHOUT 03.25.2006 04:59 PM
