Bill Berry to Play With REM.....

at the Georgia Music Hall of Fame Awards Ceremony. Hooray!

R.E.M. will be inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame on September 16th in Atlanta at the World Congress Center. Bill, Peter, Mike, and Michael will play a short set to celebrate their induction into the state Hall of Fame whose list of past inductees includes such notables as Ray Charles, James Brown, Otis Redding, Gram Parsons and the B-52-s. This promises to be a very special evening as, in addition to R.E.M., Gregg Allman of The Allmann Brothers Band, Jermaine Dupri, and Dallas Austin will be inducted as well. (from their e-mail newsletter)

Check out Bill's Gang of Four shirt;)

Holla

kingcoffee 05.31.2006 08:48 PM

Awesome. They never should have let him go.

atari 2600 05.31.2006 09:05 PM

they should have never allowed him to quit...they should have held him hostage & made him play...but seriously, it is unfortunate that they couldn't convince him to stay when he decided to quit.

The man had surgery on his brain if I (rem)ember correctly. I might take some time off too.

krastian 05.31.2006 11:04 PM

That and he just wanted to wind down and live a normal life on his farm....I can respect that.

Maybe he'll stick around and REM will be good again...

atari 2600 09.24.2006 09:02 AM

That's sadly probably not possible even if he does stick around, but Berry rejoining would still offer some hope, I guess. It's certainly a nice and apropos sentiment.

The recording I posted the link to is a soundboard which was not notated where I got it from, but it's not a good soundboard really. The person mixing is way too into the drums (especially on "Begin the Begin"), perhaps due to the excitement of Bill playing with them again. Mike & Bill are miked for background vocals & Bill's voice sounds like crap. Also, Pete Buck sounds very rusty and he's a player of the creative variety that needs to have all cylinders firing to be really good like he's capable.

Michael dedicates "Man on the Moon" to Ann Richards, and it tugged at my heart. A few years ago, they did a version for a Reveal radio concert of the song & "I've Been High" as well that surpasses the studio versions.
A truncated "Midnight Rider" with Gregg Allman is the show's highlight, and I'm not even much of an Allman Brothers enthusiast.

I've got high hopes for this one:
REM2005-10-08 Kingpins Alley, Athens, GA FLAC

DemonBox 09.24.2006 03:08 PM

that's really cool. they really went downhill after Berry left, but this would have been so great to see live.

Katy 09.24.2006 06:41 PM

It's on YouTube now.

When Bill left REM I scrawled "BILL BERRY COME HOME!" all over my desk... I've seen them live many times since he left and they've always been great. But I still miss Bill. I get so childishly excited every time I hear they've pulled something like this.

atari 2600 09.24.2006 09:20 PM

The October '05 reunion at the bowling alley wedding reception is a soundboard also. It's better than the Ga Music Hall of Fame performance.

These will both fit onto a single disc.

umjammer atomsk 09.24.2006 09:36 PM

Sweet news.

And this show is up for download, which is a nice upgrade to the cassette I taped off the radio. I'm not much of a listener to anything more recent of theirs, but this is good. There's a choice "The Great Beyond" on this too.
