Standards

Don't believe we've had a standards thread. Favourite standards: go.

The town I loved so well
Blue eyes cryin' in the rain
Blue moon of Kentucky
So long, it's been good to know you
I saw the light
The ole triangle
The Wild Rover
Fields of Athenry(terrible version, obviously).

Probably enough from me. I'm a bit country/ Irish-centric, I'm afraid.

I'd say, as a standard, the J Coltrane version of "My Favorite Things" can't be beat.

Also, the Robert Wyatt version of "Shipbuilding" (Written by Elvis Costello)
The Miles Davis version of "Darn That Dream"
The billions of versions of "Louie Louie"
Glice - great call on "The Wild Rover"
The mulitvarious versions of "Hey Joe"
The versions of "I'm A Man" (no-one knows the original version, from my slender knowledge, but covered v well by both Muddy Waters and Bo Diddley)
The many rip-offs of the "Peter Gunn" riff
And on the dance tip, the "Amen" riff, for sure.

Standards are out of fashion these days. It's all about inclusivity now. Unless of course you happen to be half way intelligent, in which case you can just fuck right off.

MellySingsDoom 06.20.2008 03:29 PM

I would fuck right off, but there's all these cans of cheap Belgian beer in the way. Oy vey, what's a queer to do (apart from SHUT UP!)?

demonrail666 06.20.2008 03:33 PM

I'll tell you what. the standard of pub staff has hit the fuckin' floor over the past ten years. It's almost embarrassing.

acousticrock87 06.20.2008 03:36 PM

Bill Evans - Blue in Green
Thelonious Monk - Rythm-A-Ning
Billie Holiday - Strange Fruit
Dizzy - Salt Peanuts

You're telling me. In all seriousness, some pub staff in Soho feel they have the right to be a total cunt to the patrons. What is this, a "Fame Academy" for people who want to work in a record shop? Jeez! Round here in Claphamland though, to be fair, they're pretty OK, in my opinion.

in christ there is no e ast or west.

Pubs are now staffed, at least the trendier one, by students. A decent landlady/landlord is getting harder to find. Now it's all pricks with Bloc Party T shirts and myspace addresses.

MellySingsDoom 06.20.2008 04:07 PM

I'll say this - the better gay pubs/bars are still staffed by decent people with whom you can have a chat with. The lesser places are total meh-ville. As an aside, I've always found the bar staff in the sleazier places in Berlin to be really OK. The trendier places - ugh!

I guess you could call the Stooges "I Wanna Be Your Dog", if you look at this:

the modern standards are probably stuff like:

bohemian rhapsody
angels by robbie williams
hotel california
wonderwall
under the bridge

glice can keep them as far as i'm concerned

I've heard a couple versions by Uncle Tupelo, too, mother band of Wilco and Son Volt. The studio version was a country arrangement...

Black Is The Colour : Couldn't find my favourite version on youtube (Davy Graham) but the Christy Moore and Espers versions are great

Ain't Nobody's Business : Another one where my favourite is by Davy Graham, this Otis Spann one is brilliant too

Baby Please Don't Go : I've got so many different versions of this but the one I always go back to is the one I heard first, The Amboy Dukes version.

Gloria : Hendrix's version is good as is Patti Smith's altered version

You can cunt right off with your lack of reverence, y'young faced cunt. Some songs deserve to be kept. Not that you'd understand with your ears full of shit.

This Is Not Here 06.21.2008 04:09 AM

Whats a 'standard' in this context and why should I care about it?
