Hip Hop: Your Favorites

i love weird loud music, whether it be punk in its various forms, ditto metal, noise, avant garde, industrial, idm, free jazz, avant jazz, shoegaze, mathrock, blah blah etc... and these are the types of music i usually focus on when creating music of my own, whether it be in a band, or recording on my trumpet/guitar on my own. But, I realize that when you are playing music in a certain vain, then it becomes easy to tire of this music. For instance, I was playing in this band last year and we were doing like a royal trux slayer type band, we were playing together and listening to tunes every day. i then found that on my own id be listening to more hip hop, dance, and pop music more than the stuff id be playing with the band, like the beatles, beach boys, curtis mayfield, lotta daft punk, and tons and tons and tons of hip hop. I however absolutley really love a lot of hip hop. Its a shame how bad mainstream has gotten, with the exception of lil wayne and kanye west, because in the 90's to early 00's it seemed as if hip hop was the BEST popular music. Anyways, what are your favorite hip hop artists and your favorite alblums by these artists...

Me:
Wu Tang Clan-Enter the 36 Chambers (the most important hip hop alblum ever, i said it)
Public Enemy-It Takes a Nation of Million to Hold Us Back (2nd most important), Fear of a Black Nation

PUBLIC ENEMY - Nation of Millions, Fear of a Black planet, Apocalypse 91
A TRIBE CALLED QUEST - people's instinctive tarvels, midnight marauders, low end theory
DE LA SOUL - 3 Feet High, De La Is Dead, Buhloon Mindstate, Stakes is High
DIGITAL UNDERGROUND - Sex packets
ERIC B. & RAKIM - Paid In Full, Follow The Leader
BEASTIE BOYS - Paul's Boutique, Check Yr Head, Ill Communication, Hello Nasty
DIGABLE PLANETS - Reachin'
MC SERCH - Return of the Product
GANG STARR - Hard To Earn, daily ooperation, No More Mr Nice Guy
GURU - JAZZAMATAZZ
RUN DMC - Run Dmc, Raising Hell, King of Rock
GETO BOYS - Geto Boys, We Can't Be Stopped. Uncut Dope

public enemy is the pinnacle. the Bob Marley and the Wailers of Hip Hop.

Biggie Smalls was just a fat fuck turd looking to make money to feed his 10,000 a day calorie habit.
The Geto Boys make NWA and Dre and EZ look like the poser college boys they were.

NWRA 01.31.2008 11:25 AM

Jay Z's The Blueprint is very good and reminds me of Gang Star's Hard To Earn with its deep, jazzy and soulful beats and heartfelt lyrics (well, there's still a bit of bragging and dissing but its confined to a couple of tracks and his lines are quite smart anyway). It's consistent: every song is strong, and its certainly not what I expected

Otherwise I just like the obvious ones though Alias's The Other Side Of The Looking Glass is worth a mention, its the best Anticon release that I've heard: the production is very full and 'musical' (violins, flutes, and electronic flourishes) which are underpinned by really crisp-sounding, hard beats which you would think would be incongrous but compliment it well.

Does anyone else think Fear Of A Black Planet, Apocalypse 91 and Muse Sick N Hour Mess Age (underrated!) are better than It Takes A Nation, which sounds tepid and weak (not the collage of sound that I like) and uses the same samples as loads of albums from that age (EMPD, etc)?

Rob Instigator 01.31.2008 11:45 AM

the Bomb Squad produced songs for a lot of albums of that time, which affects how we see PE's ioriginiality today

nation of millions is a fucking genius sampled album. everything in it is meant to agitate.
scrapes, squeals, sirens, screams, etc. No one has done it better since, partly because of the change in copyright laws after de la soul got sued
it is bullshit,.

I hate fucking hip hop samples where you can tell exactly what song it is from and that only samples one song so you are basically rappig over an instrumental version of a police song, or a tom tom club song. I fucking HATE that shit.

so because he was fat makes him a bad mc? his flow and lyrics are both unfuckwithable. prolly my favorite mc ever. made the most violent of lyrics sound soulful and nonchalant.

But when I listen to It Takes A Nation Of Millions, I don't hear scrapes, squeals, etc. It's got a reputation as being 'noize!' but all I hear is ordinary-sounding hiphop songs based around funk samples (apart from She Watch Channel Zero), just like EMPD, etc.

Fear Of A Black Planet is the one where the songs are composed with many, many samples from all kinds of sources in a big abrasive noizy assault

I don't enjoy his rhymes, do not enjoy teh company he kept, do not enjoy his stupid themes, and cannot for the life f me stand the bullshit bullshit samples" his producers used. The Geto Boys would have killed that fuck with Mind of a Lunatic alone.
.

I also did not like that he used to sling crack rock. same reason I find Ice T a fucking joke, ex pimp, woman beater, asshole.
