classic albums, atsonicpark edition # 18: the residents - third reich n roll

THE RESIDENTS, "THIRD REICH N ROLL"
1981, RALPH RECORDS

1. Swastikas on Parade
2. Hitler was a Vegetarian

It's very difficult to pick just one Residents album to consider a "Classic album", so keep in mind that I'm only choosing this one because it's the most brilliant of their early recordings (of which you need all of). My personal favorite is "Duckstab/Buster and Glen"... However, that one may not blow your mind as much as this one..

How the fuck do I describe this? Uh.. Basically, it's two 20- or so- minute songs that "cover" old garage rock songs from the 60's into these huge medleys of odd riffs and weird voices. That's not the best description in the world, but it works. Essential listening...

Great album. I have not listened to it in some time, but I remember loving in particular how "Hey Jude" and "Sympathy for the devil" slowly meld together in a somewhat sinister tone at the end of the record.

Great album. spot on about "Duck Stab/Buster and Glen" which is also my single most fav. Residents album (have it on vinyl and cd) next to maybe the Commercial Album. it seems this is one area that both agree with!

Of the ones I have, I think I like "Our Finest Flowers" the best, but I haven't heard this one.

I just played this album for a friend of mine at lunch at work at 2 am this morning. We listened to the whole thing. He was laughing through some of it and he said at the end, "That was fucking amazing." Yes!

noisereductions 04.20.2009 09:38 AM

I still need this one.

Great album. It always amazes me how creepy it sounds when they do "yummy yummy yummy I got love in my tummy".
