paranoia agent!

Holy shit. I got the Paranoia Agent dvd set about a month ago; I remembered seeing an episode on Adult Swim a few years ago and not really knowing what was going on but being very intrigued. Anyway, I finally got around to watching it (it's only 13 episodes) -- holy SHIT, that was an amazing anime! Psychologically complex, dark, and intensely story-driven (nearly every episode only focuses on one or two characters and it's always a different character, and almost all the episodes are of a completely different nature; some are light and comedic, one is completely in a character's head, etc.). Has anyone seen this? Excellent. I'm pretty familiar with all the popular anime (Dead Leaves, Evangelion, FLCL, etc..) and a little bit of the more obscure stuff (Cromartie High School, Blood, Techno Police, etc..).. but this ranks amongst the best.

If anyone wants to reccomend anything else, lemme know. I've seen one of Satoshi Kon's films (Pefect Blue) and highly enjoyed it.

If you like Paranoia Agent, you should check out the other stuff that Satoshi Kon has directed like Perfect Blue, Tokyo Godfathers, Milennium Actress, and Paprika. The man is brilliant.

Perfect Blue

Tokyo Godfathers

Milennium Actress

Paprika

My favorite is pretty easily Milennium Actress - about a pair of reporters who are giving an interview to a very old actress. As she retells the stories of her life, the reporters find themselves actually reliving things with her.

The most common theme amongst Kon's films is how reality is really mutable and changes depending on your perspective.

fuckin a, thanks for the recommendations

after years of being confined to the miyazaki oeuvre, ive been exploring other sides of anime (thanks, netflix!). netflix thinks i'lll give these 5 stars, and it' usually pretty accurate.

perfect blue is not available there, but greencine's got it!

Good point, Memories has that wonderful space sequence that Kon directed.

If you'd like to check out other unusual Japanese animation flicks with a more mature feel you can still check out a couple of Ghibli flicks like Pompoko, and Grave of the Fireflies.

Have you seen Jin-Roh? Very dark set in a world where the Nazis never lost world war 2.

Let's go "hard-to-find"
Also a very trippy and difficult to find video would be Night on the Galactic Railroad. Angel's Egg and 1001 nights are both by Yoshitaka Amano (Final Fantasy video game's character designer)

Finally - there's a new French animated film that I have to see. It's called Persepolis:

That's not me - I don't smoke...
well...my dorky Lambretta smokes. (it has the Battle of the Planets symbol on the legshield)

Now you'll have to excuse me - I have to go back to reading manga -
FOR WORK! BWA HAHAHAHAHA!!

i'll second the recommendations for memories and tokyo godfathers, but i thought perfect blue was a bit of a let down, but that could have been due to my expectations being too high.
paprika is first on my list of things too see at the moment.

does anyone know if tales of earthsea is any good? i'm kind of expecting it to be crappy, but i've heard it's not so bad.

the only other animes i've seen recently were old, judge (so bad it's hilariously good) and ultimate teacher (funny and totally fucking weird)

atsonicpark 11.08.2007 03:13 PM

thank you, I'm definitely meaning to investigate more of Kon's work; I have Perfect Blue and have seen Tokyo Godfathers but not the other works. THanks everyone.

i recently saw samurai 7, which started just so-so and then picked up. it had the original plotline of kurosawa's 7 samurai, then goes nuts-- nice plotlines and amusing characters. not super original but a nice mishmash of samurai, cyberpunk, and cartoon politics

the series has an annoying preview and summary sequences than can easily be skipped on the dvd-- just hit skip scene 5 times for next episode.

so anyway, any other anime like samurai champloo? this was funny as shit and had plenty of r-rated language & material, which makes it very watchable. wouldn't mind getting hooked to something like this again.

atsonicpark 11.10.2007 06:19 PM

well, you have seen cowboy bebop, right?

hell yes. this reminded me a lot of that actually. same director, no?

im not sure i've seen the cowboy bebop movie though... i might check that out-- but then...? what will i do with my anime addictions? oh perfect blue is on its way from greencine btw.

atsonicpark 11.10.2007 06:31 PM

Yeah, they have a lot of the same cast/crew.

Perfect Blue was cool. All the reviews mention Hitchcock, and that's true. It perhaps doesn't explore certain psychological aspects as much as you would like it to; the whole movie seems like it's building towards something amazing. Still, a very pleasant and easy watch, I watched it twice in a week with no problem.

cool-- let's keep this thread alive...

im out of here for now but thanks again
