, before 90's it was called yugoslavia ,there were 6 countries and it was comunistic state !croatia is inipendent state from 1991...WELL YOU ALL KNOW THAT IT WAS WAR 91' SINCE 95' ,AND CROATIA IS NOW A BIG TURISTIC PLACE ,IN CROATIA ARE ONLY 4,5 MILL PEOPLE ,SMALL COUNTRY...

All I know is that the Popoviches (my great great grandparents on my dad's mom's side) left Croatia in the 1880s, moved to Roslyn, Washington (where Northern Exposure was filmed) and all the men died of the black lung. I don't know what they were trying to escape, but I wonder if it was worth it.

i had an anthropology instructor from croatia, but she never really said much of anything about the place.

at that age croatia was in austria hungarian monarchy, so it was probably politican reason why your great great granparents went to usa, or they want to start a better life in usa,i know that from all europe at this age went to usa to start a better life

How were catholics treated then? It might be because they were Catholic. My mom told me that my grandma told her my brother was going to go to purgatory because she hadn't baptized him immediately when he was a baby.

i have never been myself but i know people who have and they say it's quite beautiful.It's also quite near Italy wich is where i come from.

space_monkey, my family originates from their, my grandfather who was 100% Croatian actually owned the Croatian Center in Pittsburgh. Actually my last name really resembles the city name sibenik in Croatia.

And every month I get a newspaper, in Croatian, about Pittsburgh's local Croatian gatherings and Croatia's current events...
