Cat survives 80 foot fall
From the BBC News website:
"A cat from South Carolina used up at least one of its nine lives after surviving an 80ft fall from a tree. Piper had been stuck in the tree for eight days before her owners attempted the ill-fated rescue." You MUST see the video of this at http://news.bbc.co.uk/nolavconsole/u...wm_4833040.stm (hopefully that'll work). It's incredible how the cat just gets up almost immediately and runs away as fast as its legs can carry it. |
I saw that on PTI.

Good for that cat, 80' is no joke. Gotta respect cats, those guys always land on their feet.
|
that's a long drop... but luckily cats use their tails to spin their bodies fast enough to be feet down and ready to run every time.
|
speaking as a man who lives with four cats and hates everyone of them it woulda been pretty funny if it just died

I love the cats, that's some heart. Go cat go cat go.

From our archives.
On this day last year, sonicl was concerned about the fate of a cat called piper. |
"You must spread some reputation around before giving it to sonicl again." I love cats and my cats are constantly going up trees, only not so high.
Anyway, how did the little fellow claw his way up there in the first place? It seemed like a long trunk with no branches except on top. |
nice, go cat.
|
cats rule all. they have ridiculously fantastic hearing, and LOVE sonic youth!

did it destroy any records though, that is the question?
|
Yes, it is in the Guinness Book of Records under the category, "Bizarrest Bump on an Internet Messageboard".

vinyl records that you listen to. this is a reference to an earlier thread. |
Apparently cats have a low terminal velocity, so after about 20 feet they stop speeding up and start to glide/slow down. They have better chances if they fall higher than 20 feet.
I remember seeing a video of some assholes trying to kill a cat by throwing it off an apartment block, not knowing that it would almost certainly survive. The cat fell, landed, and just walked away. The guys were like 'WHAT?!'. Cats rule. |
Thats amazing.
|
yeah, cat's also have very flexible bones so they hardly ever break something when they land from such height. i want to be a cat.
|
I'm really not that concerned.
