What a waste of good hyberbole, the article didn't even remotely try to explain him as any kind of driving force behind specifically Sonic Youth music, but it was a great piece about his multi-talented approach, including in production and visual arts. Props to Lee, he is at the least the better of all the post-Sonic Youth projects for sure..

I always thought lee was the true "progressive" element of the band. Thurston and Kim will likely always get the credit amongst the ill-informed-passing-phase fan, and fair enough they were the primary song writers. Lee, however, was always largely responsible for churning Thurston's skeletal jams into bodies of sonic magic. Of course, as a collective, they all deserve credit + I really hope to see Thurston and Lee work together again one day

Always struck me that they were equal parts, just got there in different ways - Lee was the old-school Deadhead muso, Thurston the Ramones punk guy. Balanced each other out, why they work so well as a unit. I think Lee's bag of tricks, ie: actually being able to construct a song in the classic songwriterly sense has stood him in better stead as time's gone on.

Deadhead muse... indeed that is such an apt description of lee. Me, I think that lee always brought fewer "lee songs" to the table, but it always sounded like lee's songs were more fully formed and created by lee as an almost solo effort. However, his sound touches all the other spngs too so it seems like he was also heavily involved with the thurston/kim tunes meaning he was indeed a driving force. Lee struck me as the gy who brought in his own finished tunes, then sat back letting the thurston/kim songs develop by adding things or emphasizing what worked and what sucked. The proof is in how much simpler and frankly derisive Thurston's solo albums sound in comparison to his sonic youth material. You can hear Lee's contributions by what is missing on the thurston solo albums
