wise decision, and you can dual boot so you can run linux if you want, windoze bites except for 3d animation which macs arent really up to scratch yet

still i could not do without windows-- but i think xp is the end of the line for me.

as for linux, all very nice, but its a pain in the ass every time you wanna install anything.

check it out. I'm lucky i got mine second hand for £100 in mint condition, all i had to do is buy the new (very expensive) software for it. and this was over 2 years ago and its been fine ever since.

hm maybe it's the lack of memory, i think 256megs (for the basic old ones) is too little.

now see this is the thing-- i like the mac OS buy paying $600 for the hardware of an imac mini and then having to upgrade memory etc reeks of ripoff to my builder's instincts.

the day i can put together my own machine & then slap mac OS on it as if it were linux, im switching on the spot.

you are probably right about the memory.

my wife bought an ibook from her friend. it was 3 years old when she got it (she got a good deal) and I laugh like a maniac everytime it breaks!

she's had to have it repaired twice now!

by a second hand 3 yr old pc and see how that stands up. my powerbook is 2 1/2 years old and is solis as

if you were to buy my 8-year old pc you'd have one of the finest machines ever built on this planet. ok, not "one of the" in the fingers of a hand, but certainly i can claim to be near the top 5% of the population or something. ha ha. not sure. the motherboard is 3 years old though and it fucking rocks.

of course my computer has gone through plenty of transmogrifications, to the point that (i think) not a single original component remains, like heraclitus's river, but that's not the point.

the point is that, whereas all macs are macs, not all pcs are created equal. sure it's easy to take potshots at $300 pcs from walmart, but i've built mine with great love & care & i can tell you it for the price my box kicks any mac in its arctic white ass. for the price, that is.

now, i would instal OsX if in it if i could, but i can't. osX is a great little operating system, i do enjoy it in spite of its limitations, and i am tempted to buy a mac, and i think i want to, but i do feel ripped off by mac's prices and limited hardware choices. which is the reason why i quit having a mac in the 90s, in the first place. if mac allowed me to put their software on any hardware, just like win-doze, i would do it in a new york minute. i think the day may be near after they had the good business sense to switch to intel processors.

my 2003 ibm x30 still kicks fucking ass, by the way, better than any 4-year old mac laptop i've seen.

my PC is at least 6 years old. I've added parts and taken some out and it's still rolling. I have to vacuum cat hair out of the inside every few months, but other than that it's as good as ever!

I can fix just about anything that goes wrong with this machine (software and hardware), but the mac has to be "sent off".

Yeah, my PC is 9 years old, but I add and change often, so it's a different machine than I started with, just like !@#$%'s. The current motherboard/processor is about 4 years old. I've changed RAM and graphics cards since then though. I've never encountered a problem that wasn't simple to solve.

I plan on doing a massive overhaul this summer. New mobo, processor, RAM, graphics card. I have Vista (my school has it for free), but I'm going to wait to install it until then.

I would never ever allow any Apple product in my apartment or on my person, but I'd rather just stay out of the old argument. Different strokes.
